Vice President of Human Resources for our client, a mission-driven acute care hospital committed to delivering compassionate, high-quality healthcare to its community. This full-time, hybrid executive role is based in Chicago, IL, and is available immediately.
Position Overview
The Vice President of Human Resources serves as a senior advisor to Administration and departmental leadership, driving the full spectrum of HR functions across the organization. This is a true generalist role requiring deep expertise in every facet of Human Resources, from talent acquisition and compensation design to regulatory compliance and organizational development.
A unique aspect of this position is its expansive scope; the VP of HR is actively involved in hospital operations, quality and regulatory affairs, patient safety initiatives, and patient satisfaction programs. This leader is expected to bring best practices to the organization and apply data and evidence-based methodologies to drive continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a trusted advisor to Administration and departmental management on all human resources matters, including interpretation of federal and state labor laws and internal institutional policies.
- Initiate, develop, and recommend HR and managerial policies, procedures, and programs; provide communication and training to promote policy compliance, skill development, and best practice implementation.
- Design and implement competitive benefit plans; recommend program enhancements within budget and ensure full compliance with employee benefit plan regulations.
- Design and implement employee compensation programs that promote marketplace competitiveness; create policies ensuring budget compliance, fair treatment, and adherence to wage/hour statutes and taxation guidelines.
- Manage performance evaluation and merit increase programs effectively and consistently.
- Design and implement recruitment programs utilizing best practices in branding, sourcing, screening, and onboarding to hire and retain staff aligned with patient and operational needs.
- Monitor key HR metrics including turnover, vacancy rates, time-to-fill, and regulatory compliance indicators (Joint Commission, Wage & Hour Regulations).
- Conduct training for managerial and hourly staff on employment compliance topics (HIPAA, infection control) and skill development areas such as conflict resolution, coaching, negotiation, and meeting facilitation.
- Contribute to the Management Executive Team and Leadership teams through process design, best practice research, and strategic communication.
- Manage the Human Resources department staff and financial resources to maximize performance across financial, customer service, quality, and continuous improvement dimensions.
- Actively participate in hospital operations, quality and regulatory affairs, patient safety programs, and patient satisfaction initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
- 7–10 years of progressive HR leadership experience, preferably within an acute care or complex healthcare setting.
- True generalist background with expertise across all areas of Human Resources.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and inspire a team of HR professionals.
- Exceptional listening, written, and verbal communication skills with strong presentation capabilities.
- Proven track record of applying data and evidence-based practices to improve organizational outcomes.
- In-depth knowledge of federal and state labor laws, Joint Commission standards, HIPAA, and wage/hour regulations.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- SPHR certification desirable.
Compensation And Benefits
This full-time, hybrid role offers a base salary of $180,000, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes health coverage and paid time off.
